This machine images, measures and sorts fruit by size into bins from "too small to measure" – XL from left to right respectively.
After all the jokes about the things we never thought we'd do, today just might take the cake! Welcome to the packing house? All those oranges we collected now need to be sized, weighed and tested for acidity, sugar content, juice color and more. Not all of this process is tremendously exciting but I thought I'd share the sorting machine! It's not quite as cool as a sorting hat but it does measure and sort the fruit into bins while thermally scanning external variables. Today, we're just dropping off and recording plot macro data but tomorrow we'll be testing the Brix/Acid ratio, juice yield and optics leading us to understand orchard health, fruit maturity and quality.
